Subject: Number of Disabled Students in Turkey in 2017

Minister of National Education İsmet Yılmaz announced that the number of disabled students in Turkey is 306,205.

It is required by law that all educational institutions make the necessary arrangements so that disabled students can go to school with their wheelchairs.

If it is not possible for disabled students to use laboratories, computer rooms, music rooms and libraries, these units must be moved to the first floors, a disabled elevator, portable stair climber, stair lift or disabled platform must be built so that students can reach these units.

Considering that the number of disabled students is 306,000, this is not a number to be underestimated.

Minister of National Education Yılmaz made the following remarks regarding disabled students reaching the educational unit they need, “In all projects carried out by our Ministry and all approved special projects, criteria regarding the access of the disabled are taken into consideration and implemented in new school constructions. It has been instructed to the governorates that the aim should be to prepare an educational environment for the physically disabled on the ground floors of previously constructed school buildings and that efforts should be made to achieve these goals to the extent possible.”
