Elevators will be designed to be suitable for disabled people in all buildings constructed after January 1, 2017.
With the enactment of the Planned Areas Type Zoning Regulation as of January 1, 2017, municipalities will use this zoning regulation. The regulation stipulates that elevators must be at least 10 people in all buildings to be built after this date. Berkay Eriş, the Elevator Control Center Manager of the Izmir Branch of the Chamber of Mechanical Engineers, stated that elevator dimensions have changed in order to make them accessible to the disabled, and said the following:
“Elevators will be 120 centimeters to 180 centimeters as required by the regulation. The dimensions have been expanded so that a disabled person can maneuver in the elevator with a wheelchair. The regulation will also be reflected in elevator designs. If there is more than one elevator in the building, only one elevator will be this size. This change was made as a result of the legal regulation made for the disabled in 2008. The space allocated for elevators in buildings will also increase. Because the land was so valuable, little space was allocated for elevators and the area was kept small.”
