Elevator History

Elevator History

In the 19th century, freight elevators were used in some mines and factories to transport coal and other necessary materials. The first elevators that did not endanger people's lives were built in the mid-19th century. Until this period, buildings in cities were built at most five or six stories high, high enough for people to climb up by stairs.

These safe elevators were powered by steam. In these elevators, a steam engine rotated a drum, and the rope that pulled the elevator car was wrapped around this drum, just like in reel fishing rods. The elevator was invented by Elisha Graves Otis.
