Disabled Elevator License
Of course, no license is required to use a disabled elevator. However, some documents and licenses are of course required for elevator installers and contractors and sectors such as contractors.
To give an example from abroad; In some countries, such as the United States, new legislation effective January 1, 2022 requires businesses and professions engaged in the design, construction, installation, inspection, testing, maintenance, modification, service and repair of elevators and other vehicles to be licensed by the State Department of Labor.
As of this effective date:
An Elevator Contractor License is required to engage in elevator and transportation work or accessibility disabled elevator work or to represent yourself as an elevator contractor.
An Elevator Inspection Contractor License is required to engage in elevator and transportation inspection work or to represent yourself as an elevator inspection contractor.
An Accessibility Elevator Technician License is required to engage in accessibility elevator work or represent yourself as an accessibility elevator technician for the design, construction, installation, maintenance, alteration, service and repair of accessibility elevators.
An Elevator Mechanic License is required to engage in elevator and transportation work or represent yourself as an elevator mechanic for the design, construction, installation, maintenance, alteration, service and repair of elevators and other conveyances.
An Elevator Inspector License is required to participate in elevator and transportation inspections or represent yourself as an elevator inspector for the inspection or testing of elevators and other conveyances.
An Elevator Accessibility Technician License may be used in lieu of an Accessibility Elevator Technician license for limited use in elevator and transportation work limited to accessibility platform lifts within the provisions of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) rules and standards. Elevator Contractor License
An Elevator Contractor License is required to engage in elevator and transportation business or accessibility elevator business or to represent oneself as an elevator contractor.
Renewal requirement: Every two (2) years
The requirements for this license are:
Proof of general liability, personal injury and property damage insurance in the amount of a minimum of one million dollars
Proof of current Workers' Compensation Insurance
Proof of current Disability Insurance
The business must be owned or employing a NYS DOL licensed elevator repairman
Some licenses are free, while others may charge a fee.
A Disabled Elevator License is only required for manufacturers, contractors and installers based on the type of work they do. This is determined by the state.
